In his farewell innings Sanath could only score just 2 runs having faced only 4 balls. In reply to England’s 229 Sri Lanka could score only 121 runs. Sri Lanka lost by 110 runs in the’ 1st NatWest’ trophy 5 ODI series played at the kennington Oval in London under the D/L method in a rain shortened game restricted to 32 overs only.

 About one and a half decades ago, the main reason why the cricket loving fraternity thronged to see our matches was to see in particular the flamboyant manner, the ‘Master Blaster’ Sanath Jayasuriya batted. In the 1996 World Cup series which Sri Lanka won, Sanath Jayasuriya was named the’ Man of The Series’. Sanath Jayasuriya in the  recent past went beyond his cricketing abilities to take up politics. He is presently a Member of Parliament from his native birth place, Matara District. Today he participates in his  farewell ODI match against England due to commence at 5.30 p.m. local time.
